general characteristics for conversational Spanish small group tutoring sessions assembled by Spanish Black Belt

Groups are assembled by Spanish Black Belt throughout the year

You submit an application and then wait between a few days and a few weeks for Spanish Black Belt to match you with up to 2 other students that share your same level, and schedule and meeting location preferences. Your sessions will start at a specific date and time and will run for 8 weeks. Once it starts we will not allow other students to join to avoid distractions and to make sure all progress at the same pace. To see a list of groups currently scheduled please click here.

Groups are very small in size (up to 3 students per group)

Conversation Spanish Small Group Tutoring Sessions in DC, VA, MD, NY, NJ and CO currently have an amazingly small size of two to three students, a size that fosters your learning and promotes personal interaction. This class size has profound implications. Classes at colleges and traditional language institutes because of their size of 15 to 20 students each have no alternative but to offer lecture-style classes that focus a lot on grammar and little in practice and conversation. What ends up happening after finishing a term with them is that you may understand some grammar but on the other hand you end up not even being able to conduct a minimum conversation in Spanish.

Focuses on developing conversational skills through professional guidance

Our Spanish small group sessions will focus on developing your conversational skills, speaking and listening, while still helping you improve in all other skills of the language: reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary acquisition. Our group sessions will also be professionally guided so that you don't just practice speaking Spanish with native speakers but have real improvement that will take you to the next levels.

You study with others at the same level

Sharing classes with a small group of other highly motivated students is a great way to expand your knowledge of Spanish and expand your personal network. Practicing in a group matched by ability has several distinct advantages. Group sessions can be comforting and inspirational because you see other students working through the same language challenges you are tackling. It also helps everyone to learn from each other’s mistakes. Other non-native speakers understand what you are accomplishing and have lots of patience as you speak because, believe it or not, they’re gaining just as much from listening to you as you are from practicing speaking.

Meets face-to-face on two-hour sessions once a week for 8 weeks

You will meet face-to-face with your other classmates and your tutor at a convenient cafe or at your tutor's home without needing to commute far away from where you live. Group will meet 1 day a week on a two-hour session each week. It is expected that you will need to attend sessions for 8 weeks in order to cover the material required to move forward to the next belt level (i.e. white belt to yellow belt). If you are interested in improving at a faster pace, please consider our Tailored One-on-One Spanish Classes or Self-Assembled Conversational Spanish Small Group Sessions. Despite having covered all the required material, you will still need to successfully pass the next belt level examination to be granted that next belt level.
